Hard anodizing is considered for gripper jaws, fixtures, sliding interfaces, guides, and loaded aluminum components that need more surface durability than a standard cosmetic anodic finish.

The process creates a more substantial oxide layer, so holes, threads, bores, bearing seats, and mating faces need deliberate tolerance and masking decisions. Functional requirements should lead the specification; dark color is a secondary and variable outcome.

Is hard anodizing always black?

No. Natural hard anodizing can range from gray to dark tones depending on alloy and process. A decorative black appearance needs a separate, controlled requirement.

Should bearing bores be masked?

They may be masked or machined with finish allowance depending on wear, fit, conductivity, and assembly needs. The decision should be made before production.

Can hard anodizing replace hardened steel?

Not automatically. It changes the aluminum surface but does not give the base material all properties of steel. Load, wear mode, impact, and service life require engineering review.
