Thin metallic color and surface performance built on a prepared substrate.

Physical vapor deposition creates a thin coating on a compatible, prepared substrate and is considered for tool components, precision hardware, trim, and parts needing a black, gold, bronze, or other metallic appearance with surface-performance objectives.

PVD does not level a rough or scratched base. Polishing, hardness, cleaning, fixturing, and coating chemistry influence the result. A color reference alone does not define wear, friction, or corrosion performance.

Does PVD hide machining marks?

No. It is a thin coating and generally follows the underlying surface. The base part must be polished, brushed, or otherwise prepared to the intended appearance.

Is every black PVD coating the same?

No. Different coating chemistries can create similar colors but different wear, friction, and corrosion behavior. The process should be specified by function, not color alone.

Can PVD be applied inside deep pockets?

Coverage can be limited by line-of-sight deposition and fixturing. Deep recesses and shadowed areas need supplier review before acceptance criteria are set.
