Stainless steel is selected when parts need a durable metal surface, corrosion resistance, stiffness, wear resistance, or a clean natural-metal appearance. It is used for shafts, fittings, brackets, enclosures, manifolds, instrument hardware and sheet metal assemblies.

Should a drawing call out stainless steel or a specific grade?

A specific grade is preferred when corrosion resistance, certificates, strength, weldability or customer approval matters. General stainless wording can slow quotation review.

Can stainless parts be both machined and passivated?

Yes. Passivation is commonly reviewed after machining or fabrication, but cleaning, heat tint, embedded contamination and the specified grade affect the result.

When should 316 be considered instead of 304?

316 is commonly reviewed for more demanding corrosion exposure. The actual environment, temperature, cleaning process and documentation requirements should guide the decision.
